Copa America - Brazil 0 Honduras 2

First Published: Jul 24, 2001

Honduras found it easier than expected to defeat Brazil's reserve team and the shock for the Copa holders could last a long time.

Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari will make wholesale changes from the squad prepared with just three days notice for this devalued event but defeat next month by Paraguay in a 2002 World Cup qualifier will give the new Brazil coach his first massive crisis only two months into the job.

To bill the result as one of the great upsets is crazy.

This Copa event is a sham and Scolari fielded reserves - although well known stars such as Denilson and Juninho were involved in what was little more than Brazil's third team - but they were playing late substitutes drafted in to make up numbers for television and were expected to win.

Scolari now knows how hard his job is.

He tried hard to avoid the position when it was offered to him last year and again in June but he is the man chosen by the CBF to preside over a Brazil team that are a disgrace.

They were lazy and sloppy throughout against Honduras and if Scolari is fired next month at least ten of the current Brazil squad should go with him.

Brazil are living in the past if they think Scolari can turn his present charges into a winning team and they need World Cup wins quickly to stand a chance of reaching Japan and Korea.

Saul Martinez is now a national hero in Honduras with two goals starting with a header in the 59th minute which deflected in off defender Belletti on the goal line after a cross from Julio Cesar Leon created the near post chance with a driven cross.

Martinez scored from close range when he stuck the ball low past goalkeeper Marcos tin injury time.

David Carcamo of Honduras and Brazil's Emerson then tried to have a fight and were sent off but Emerson could not even get that right.

Expect some improvement next month from Brazil in the World Cup games though.

FIFA and the CBF are determined that Brazil do reach the finals next year. Their final two qualifiers in the autumn should provide maximum points but Paraguay could prove a difficult test next month and they still have to face Argentina.
