Ecuador goalkeeper Geovanny Ibarra saved well from a free kick by Jovan Kirovski in the 16th minute and from the resulting corner Ibarra knocked a header over the cross bar from Gregg Berhalter.
Agustin Delgado was a willing runner for the visitors throughout and came close with an angled drive in the first half but Joe-Max Moore came close with the best chance of the game when he was clean through on goal by Kirovski but sent his shot far too near to Ibarra.
