2002 World Cup - Mexico 1 Costa Rica 2

First Published: Jun 17, 2001

Mexico crashed to defeat at home to Costa Rica as their World Cup qualifying hopes continue to suffer.

An 87th minute winner from Hernan Medford saw the visitors come from behind to stun the crowd at the Azteca stadium who were hoping that reports from abroad of their team's miserable form had been exaggerated.

They were not and Mexico lost their first ever World Cup qualifier at the stadium with coach Enrico Meza set to be sacked probably before they travel to Honduras for qualifier on Wednesday.

Medford produced the winner when he reached a rebound after Mexico goalkeeper Osvaldo Sanchez diverted a long drive from William Sunsing but Costa Rica goalkeeper Erick Lonnis still needed to make a save from a dipping shot in the dying seconds and seal the win.

Mexico played reasonably well but failed to kill off the visitors after Jose Abundis gave then a seventh minute lead when he headed in from a corner with the Mexicans well in control of play. However, Paolo Wanchope hit a shot on the turn against a post in the 11th minute and Victor Ruiz did the same for Mexico a minute later.

Costa Rica had much more of the second half and equalised when Rolando Fonseca hit a great curling and dipping free kick that soared into the top corner in the 73rd minute and Mexico failed to recover.
