2002 World Cup - Australia 4 New Zealand 1

Australia will face a two leg play against a South American team in November for a place at the 2002 World Cup finals after beating New Zealand 4-1 in Sydney.

Australia won 6-0 on aggregate and can now clinch their first place in the finals since 1974 under coach Frank Farina. They lost a play-off in 1997 against Iran to lose out on France '98.

David Zdrilic put Australia in the lead in only the sixth minute with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area. Brett Emerton finished a long run with another low drive for 2-0 but Vaughan Coveny got a goal for New Zealand with a penalty in the 42nd mnute. Tony Vidmar had fouled Jonathan Perry to give away New Zealand's first goal aganst Australia since 1989.

John Aloisi finished from close range on the hour mark and Zdrilic grabbed his second when he hit in a loose ball for Australia's 72nd goal of the Oceania qualifying tournament achieved in only six matches.
