A goal from the returning Alexander Mostovoi helped Russia scramble a win over the Faroe Islands in Moscow.

After Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Slovenia, Russia showed few signs of improvement and can thank the Celta Vigo star for their victory after he returned to the team following suspendion.

A dull game had little incident but the visitors did claim a penalty when striker John Petersen was felled in the area.

Mostovoi settled the issue in the 18th minute by a neat piece of skill.

With little movement ahead of him he went for goal from the edge of the penalty box by clipping the ball up for a volley and he got enough momentum on the bal to carry it into the net past goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen.

Rolan Gusev and Dmitry Khokhlov drove shots against the bar from close range in the second half.
