2002 World Cup - Colombia 2 Bolivia 0

First Published: Mar 28, 2001

Colombia striker Juan Pablo Angel ditched his dire club form for Aston Villa in the Premiership to lead his national team to a 2-0 win over Bolivia in Bogota.

Angel has yet to score for his new club in England after a £9.5 million transfer from River Plate in January but he was inspired by the return of Faustino Asprilla to the Colombia team after almost a year's absence.

Asprilla set up Angel's first goal and the striker scored his second with a penalty kick to help his team to 19 points from eleven matches in the CONMEBOL qualifying section.

Colombia almost had a dream start as Angel bore down on goal from the kick but he was crudely chopped down just outside the penalty area by Bolivian goalkeeper Jose Carlos Fernandez but they failed to take advantage of the free kick.

But with Asprilla using a withdrawn role in midfield to good effect Colombia established immediate control of the game and the former Parma AC and Newcastle United star hit the bar with a speculative volley in the 5th minute.

Asprilla was pushed forward at the start of the second half and Colombia took the lead as a result.

In the 53rd minute he received the ball with his back to goal and turned to release Angel who rounded the advancing Fernandez to slide the ball into the net.

In the 73rd minute Gerardo Bedoya was felled in the penalty area and Angel converted the kick with a low and wide shot.

Angel had two other good chances to score but failed to produce the right finish but he must be enormously relieved to be scoring again after a dismal run in England. Maybe Villa should sign Asprilla to help him.
