2002 World Cup - Albania 1 England 3

First Published: Mar 28, 2001

England held out in a frantic injury time finish to extend their lead as Andy Cole scored his first international goal.

England failed to play out time properly and allowed Albania back into this match in five minutes of injury time after sloppy play.

Swedish coach Sven Goran Eriksson has much to teach the raw English players who can provide some exciting international matches but have yet to learn how to kil off teams if they are leading.

Finland staged a late revival on Saturday and Albania repeated the trick when substitute Raklli cut inside to drive in from a narrow angle after Rio Ferdinand gave away a needless throw in which was taken quickly over the top of the Leeds United star and into space for the striker to run in on goal.

Raklli scored again less than two minutes later but he was ruled offside in the 93rd minute.

A night of racist abuse for several England stars then turned even uglier in Tirana as bottles were thrown onto the pitch as David Beckham tried to take a free kick. The England captain did not deliver the ball properly but then headed through on the left hand side for Emile Heskey to turn the ball across the face of goal for Cole to clip in his first goal for England.

Cole was one of seven Manchester United stars in the line up at the end of the game for the English which was marred when the goal celebrations for Cole saw Arsenal left back Ashley Cole hit in the face by an object thrown from the crowd.

England had looked comfortable after going 2-0 up but loose passing that marked their game at times returned to hand the initiative back to the home team who staged a let rally which England managed to survive.

Andy Cole had set up the second goal in the 84th minute for United team mate Paul Scholes. The under fire striker carried the ball past two challenges to the left hand side of the area and played the ball across for Scholes to fire in as he fell by hitting a shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

England had made the break through in the 73rd minute when Gary Neville tried to find Michale Owen with a through pass from the right hand side but a deflection off a defender caried the ball to Paul Scholes who produced an instant clip through into Owen's run who slid the ball into the net.

Three minutes earlier David Beckham had set Cole up in front of goal for a header on the run but the striker did not get enough on the header and it spun away from the target.
