2002 World Cup - Ecuador 1 Brazil 0

First Published: Mar 29, 2001

Ecuador are on top of the world after beating Brazil for the first time in their history to stay in contention for a World Cup place in 2002.

A 49th minute goal from Agustin Delgado will live forever in Ecuador's sporting history as the home team cashed in on the altitude of their Quito stadium and poor finishing from Brazil.

A last minute double save from Romario by goalkeeper Jose Cevallos saved the points for Ecuador and ignited the parties that could burn for days.

Brazil stay second in the South American group with 20 points from 11 games but are now only one point ahead of minnows Ecuador who have lost 9-1 and 9-2 to the four times World Cup winners in recent times.

Brazil arrived in Quito only four hours before kick-off in an attempt to lessen the effects of the thin air at altitude but gave a subdued performance.

Just after 30 minutes Necaxa star Aguinaga chipped the ball over the defence for a firece Ivan Kaviedes shot across the face of the goal. Edison Mendez then put Kaviedes clear and he chipped the ball over goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni but saw his improvised effort come off the top of the crossbar.

Kaviedes dribbled past three defenders in a ten metre run and squared the ball to Delgado who scooped a cross shot into the net.

This gave the home team something to defend and Brazil were unable to raise their game with Rivaldo being substituted in the 64th minute. Romario had a great chance to equalise in the 66th minute but his shot came off the outside of the post.

More pain was to follow for Romario who launched a diving header at point blank distance for Cevallos to produce the save of his life and then get up to parry the second shot from the veteran forward.
