First Published: Mar 29, 2001

The US won 2-1 in San Pedro Sula to take top spot in the CONCACAF qualifying section.

A late Clint Mathis free kick gave the visiting team all three points after Honduras had attacked with purpose throughout the second half.

Mathis struck a swerving free kick into the net from around twenty five metres in the 87th minute and were given the lead in the 33rd minute when a low drive from midfielder Earnie Stewart found the target.

Honduras equalised during their best spell of the game on the hour mark when substitute Julio Cesar de Leon hit a low shot from close range.
