2002 World Cup - Uruguay 0 Paraguay 1

First Published: Mar 29, 2001

Paraguay moved significantly closer to a place at the 2002 World Cup finals with a 1-0 win in Montedvideo.

Uruguay suffered defeat in their first match under new coach Victor Pua and are now well behind the top five teams who will play on.

Uruguay in fact dominated the match with Paraguay concentrating on defence.

The home team was not able to play themselves past the visiting defence and the game was scruffy and untidy with heavy tackles, fouls and cheating all over the pitch as players tried to get each other booked.

Uruguay created their best chance of the first half in the 43rd minute when Gianni Guigou's diving header brought out a great save from Paraguay's goalkeeper and captain Jose Luis Chilavert.

But disaster struck for the home team in the 64th minute when their own goalkeeper Fabian Carini fluffed a clearance and Jose Cardozo was able to gather the ball and turn it acorss for substitute Guido Alvarenga to steer in.

Uruguay substitute Marcelo Zalayeta had a good chance to equalise but skied his shot with just the goalkeeper to beat but Paraguay threatened on the counter attack as the home team became increasingly desperate with Miguel Caceres and Nelson Cuevas coming close with cross shots.
