2002 World Cup - Colombia 3 Chile 1

First Published: Nov 08, 2001

Chile contributed four red cards to the wildest game yet in South America's World Cup qualifying round and lost 3-1 to Colombia in the process.

A bitter and spiteful game ended with Chile's team in tatters but with Colombia now needing to beat Paraguay away to clinch a place in the 2002 World Cup finals, they could still send Brazil into a play-off against Australia if Argentina beat or draw with Uruguay and Paraguay lose a game that means nothing to them after they qualified for the finals last night.

Chile had Victor Cancino, Moises Villarroel, Patricio Ormazabal and Marco Villaseca all sent off for late tackles after they took the lead in the 38th minute when Jaime Riveros angled in a free kick from long range.

Colombia responded amid the wild challenges and thuggery to equalise when Freddy Grisales scored from close range before Juan Pablo Angel hit in a cross shot and Jersson Gonzalez cashed in to seal the win as Chile threw away their discipline.
