2002 World Cup - Ecuador 1 Uruguay 1

First Published: Nov 08, 2001

Ecuador started a massive party in Quito by reaching the World Cup finals for the first time with a draw against Uruguay that also pushed Paraguay into next May's competition in Korea and Japan.

A second half equaliser from Celta Vigo transfer target Ivan Kaviedes equalised a Nicolas Olivera penalty in the first half and sent Ecuador through by ensuring them one of the top four places.

There is now only one automatic place on offer with Paraguay also clinching a spot with Uruaguay's failure to win in Quito.

Uruguay came to defend but took the lead when midfielder Nicolas Olivera tried to reach a long pass up field but defender Raul Guerron met him to cover the angle and guard against an attack. The two collided in what seemed an accident but Olivera made the most of the clash and Mexican referee Felipe Ramos gave a penalty which the Uruguayan raider slaped past home goalkeeper Jose Francisco Cevallos.

Uruguay then had to hold onto their lucky lead but Ecuador substitute Alex Aguinaga crossed in the 73rd minute for Kaviedes to head past Juventus' Fabian Carini in the Uruguay goal that sent the players and fans wild and brought a pitch invasion.

Paraguay visit Venezuela tonight in a game made irrelvant by Uruguay's failure to defeat Ecuador.
