Argentina came close to hammering Peru in cruise control in Buenos Aires.
The home team ripped apart Peru's defence in an opening spell that saw shots rain in on the visitors goal with Juan Veron imperiously setting up Ariel Ortega, Julio Cruz, Lazio transfer target Juan Sorin and Kily for drives that goalkeeper Miguel Miranda and his stretched defence struggled to block.
But it was only when Claudio Lopez came on as a second half substitute to take control of the game that the Argentines scored.
In the 47th minute Miranda spilled a Veron free kick and Walter Samuel was first to react to take the chance.
Lopez hit a rasping cross shot five minutes later to seal the win.
