2002 World Cup - Ukraine 1 Germany 1

First Published: Nov 10, 2001

Bayern Munich-bound Michael Ballack rescued Germany in Kyiv and hands Rudi Voller's German team a good chance of reaching the World Cup finals.

But it was close.

Ukraine made a formidabale start that confirmed all the German fears of a very bleak night in Kyiv.

Striker Andriy Voroby ran past German defender Thomas Linke to go close by hitting the post in only the second minute.

Shakhtar Donetsk defender Gennadi Zubov reacted in the 18th minute to bury a rebound ater Andriy Shevchenko saw a swerving free kick deflected into the front of the German goal mouth but Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Ballack's away goal means Germany only need a goalless draw to go through to Korea and Japan. The Ukraine now have to score in Dortmund on Wednesday following Ballack's far post finish after Alexander Zickler had headed a freekick from Leverkusen's Bernd Schneider into his path.

Linke came close with a header that came back off the cross bar with Gennady Zubov clearing Marko Rehmer's snap shot.

Shevchenko forced German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn to save just before half time with his legs and Zickler ended the half by chipping onto the roof of the net from distance.
