Ten man Czech Republic were beaten by an injury-ravaged Belgian team 1-0 and the Czechs did not manange the away goal that will make Wednesday's deciding leg easier.
Gert Verheyen was pressed into emergency service by Belgian coach Robert Waseige as a stand-in strker after five injuries suffered in the run up to this game and the Club Brugge midfielder scored from close range in the 29th minute when he chested down a cross to crash a rising shot into the roof of the net past Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek.
West Ham United defender Thomas Repka elbowed winger Bart Goor in the 42nd minute to earn an instant red card and continues a miserable disciplinary record. He was sent off twice in his first four matches for the English club earlier this season and after his loss the Czechs created only one serious scoring chance to get back on terms.
Defender Eric Deflandre had to clear from the goal line after a clipped shot from close range by Vladimir Srnicek.
