2002 World Cup - Slovenia 2 Romania 1

First Published: Nov 10, 2001

Slovenia won in Ljubljana but Romania can take an away goal into the decisive game on Wednesday in Bucharest.

The Romanians controlled much of the game but Adrian Ilie missed a good chance in the first half with Cosmin Contra fluffing a chance to score an equaliser in the second session and took the lead in the 24th minute.

Marius Niculae controlled a Contra cross to finish from close range but twenty minutes later Acomovic headed in with Milan Osterc hitting a rising cross shot in the 70th minute to give Slovenia - badly missing creative star Zlatko Zahovic with injury - a one goal advantage but Romania hold the balance in the tie.
