2002 World Cup - Uruguay 1 Argentina 1

First Published: Nov 15, 2001

Uruguay move on to meet Australia next week to decide the 32nd and final World Cup qualifying place after this 1-1 draw in Montevideo.

Argentina had already qualified and knew a good result for the home team meant possible elimination for hated rivals Brazil so had little to play for but were impressive at times.

The Uruguayans needed to get a point with Colombia winning 4-0 against Paraguay and Alvaro Recoba impressed with left winger Gianni Guigou another threat to Australia in the final play-offs.

The home team went ahead in the 18th minute when a long bal up field by Alejandro Lembo reached Dario Silva who carried the chance on to score who was later injured in a clash with goalkeeper German Burgos.

Claudio Lopez equalised in the 44th minute for Argentina with a cross shot after Uruguay had lost the ball in midfield and the visitors did not look like surrendering another goal in a second half which wound down to a draw.
