World Cup 2002: Paraguay 2 Argentina 2

First Published: Oct 09, 2001

A controversial 51st minute penalty by goal keeper Jose Luis Chilavert helped Paraguay to secure second place in the group and be almost certain of World Cup qualification. A Maradonna style 'Hand of God' by Mauricio Pochettino, as he punched a ball in from a Juan Veron corner, however, put Argentina back square on the 67th minute. Paraguay again went into the lead with a well taken, downward header past Pablo Cavallero from Gustavo Morinigo on the 70th minute. Gabriel Batistuta, one of Argentina's top strikers, recently sidelined by coach Marcelo Bielsa, then took control and nearly scored twice in the next few minutes. Only one shot went in, however, on the 74th minute as Batistuta dramatically slid the ball past a wrong footed Chilavert. The top four teams from the group qualify and Paraguay now only need two points from two games to confirm their place. Argentina are on top of the group and have already qualified.
