First Published: Oct 22, 2001

Nine-man Iran blew their place in the 2002 World Cup finals by losing 3-1 in Bahrain.

The defeat allowed Saudi Arabia to take Group A?s qualifying place leaving Iran to play-off against the United Arab Emirates and then possibly face the Republic of Ireland over two matches for a place in the finals next month.

Abdullah Marzouki gave Bahrain an 8th minute lead from close range with Ali Hussein shooting in just before the break. Ali Daei scored in the 53rd minute for Iran but Mohamed Hussain sealed the win with Sirous Dinmohammadi and Ali Reza Nikbaht and then coach Miroslav Blazevic all sent off as Saudi overtook them with a 4-1 win over Thailand in Riyadh.
