2002 World Cup - Belarus 4 Poland 1

First Published: Sep 05, 2001

Four goals from Roman Vasilyuk saw Belarus hand out a real beating to Poland.

Poland reached the World Cup finals last Saturday and their minds were clearly elsewhere in Minsk as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat.

Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was confirmed yesterday as Liverpool's new first choice goalkeeper after a £5 million transfer last week but this was no celebration for the 28 year old four goals crashed past him.

Dudek was to blame for the first goal as his weak throw was anticipated by striker Vasilyuk to score.

The new Liverpool star was then beaten by a tight shot from an angle in the 46th minute and Vasilyuk followed up with two close range goals in a great display.

Substitute Marcin Zewlakow hit a drive for a let consolation and the play-off place will be decided - with the winners meeting either Germany or England - on October 6th when Ukraine play in Poland and Belarus are in Cardiff. The Belarus side must hope the Poles can find their form again for next month to help them edge out Ukraine but it does not look likely.
