First Published: Sep 05, 2001

Spain recorded the expected win over tiny Liechtenstein to clinch their place at the 2002 World Cup finals.

Veteran defender Fernando Hierro broke the all-time caps record for Spain - formerly held by current coach Jose Camacho - to win his 82nd appearance and Raul met a Gaizka Mendieta free kick with his head in the 18th minute to put Spain on their way to Korea and Japan.

A quiet game ended as a contest when substitute Miguel Angel Nadal scored with another header in the 82nd minute to set off the celebrations.
