2002 World Cup - Paraguay 5 Bolivia 1

Paraguay hammered Bolivia 5-1` in Asuncion with goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert scoring from a free kick.

Bolivia took the lead in the 14th minute when a counter attack released Lider Paz into space and he hit a low finish on the run.

But Paraguay replied quickly. Jose Cardozo launched a header which hit the bar in the 33rd minute and Carlos Paredes hit in the rebound while Cardozo himself hit the first of a brace when he headed in a 45th minute cross from Francisco Arce to put the home team in control.

Chilavert hit in a free kick on 48 minutes before Roque Santa Cruz finished from close range in the 70th minute as did Cardozo as the clock ticked down in the 89th minute.

Paraguay remain on course for the finals next summer and stay in second place on 29 points.
