Mexico have moved up into one of the CONCACAF qualifying places for the 2002 World Cup finals with a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
The Mexicans needed two penalties to get a grip on the game against a Trinidad team reduced to ten men and have joined the US on 13 points from eight matches.
Jamaican defender Addison Belfon gave away a 24th minute penalty to ease Mexican nerves after some determined defending from the Trinidad team. He bundled over Cuauhtemoc Blanco in the penalty area and veteran Alberto Garica Aspe converted the chance.
Blanco laid off the ball for Jesus Arrelano to continue a good run in the 45th minute and fire a low shot past goalkeeper Shaka Hislop as he cut inside to find space.
Further problems arrived fro Trinidad when Belfon was red carded in the 50th minute for kicking striker Jared Borgetti from behind.
Blanco scored from an 85th minute penalty for Mexico's third goal after Hislop had felled substitute Joahan Rodriguez.
Mexico play Costa Rica in San Jose on October 7th but the Costas are already through to the finals so Mexico may fare well there and they end their campaign at home to rivals Honduras with both countries fighting with the US for the remaining two qualification places.
