Croatia ran out 2-0 winners in Zagreb with goals from Ivica Olic and Davor Suker.
The Croats were without injured Igor Tudor (Juventus), Alen Boksic (Middlesbrough), Dario Simic (Inter Milan) and Mario Stanic (Chelsea) but controlled the game from the start although they had to show patience.
The visiting defence only started to really struggle in the run-up to half time.
Suker played a withdrawn midfield role and sent Olic clear to drive under the goalkeeper in the 44th minute.
The veteran striker settled the game himself seven minutes after half time when he converted a penalty given for foul with a crisp shot.
