Gold Cup Final - US 2 Costa Rica 0

First Published: Feb 03, 2002

The United States won the Gold Cup with a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in the Rose Bowl stadium.

Josh Wolff and Jeff Agoos scored the winning goals and clinched a place in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup for coach Bruce Arena's side.

Wolff scored in the 37th minute when he was put through by Frankie Hejduk to hit a shot on the run past goalkeeper Erick Lonnis.

Agoos used a free kick in the 63rd minute to drive in the goal that clinched the title - the first for a US team since they won the 1991 Gold Cup in its inaugural edition.

A tidy performance with some disciplined defending and neat pass and move work in midfield allowed the home team to snuff out any chances for Costa Rica who showed little threat in the game.
