First Published: Jan 22, 2002

Mexico defeated 10-man Guatemala easily with a good first half display to reach the second stage of the Gold Cup.

They will meet either World Cup co-hosts South Korea or Cuba next Sunday after they took the lead with a 25th minute penalty kick.

Denis Chen was red carded for handling the ball on the goal line and after a downward header from Adolfo Bautista who took the penalty himself.

But Guatemala recovered to equalise ten minutes later when Juan Carlos Plata scored from close range .

Mexico responded only a minute later with a long range effort that rose high into the net from Marco Garces before Carlos Ochoa completed the scoring in the last minute with a cross shot inside the penalty area.
