Egypt defeated World Cup finalists Tunisia 1-0 and reach the last eight of the African Nations Cup if they beat 'flu-ridden Zambia.
Midfielder Hazem Emam scored the winner in the first half when the Egyptians were well on top.
But Egypt improved after the break and had a Jamel Zabi goal disallowed for offside in the 50th minute with Zouberi Baya free kick forcing goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary to save and keep Egypt's lead four minutes later.
Khaled el-Amin almost added to the score when he hit the post late on but it was Emam who hit the crucial strike.
Mohamed Barakat crossed from the byline for Emam to hit a low finish after controlling the ball and adjusting his weight at the far post and leave Tunisia needing to beat Senegal next week to progress.
