Gold Cup - Costa Rica 2 Haiti 1

First Published: Jan 27, 2002

Costa Rica needed extra time to finally subdue Haiti and reach the Gold Cup semi finals.

Walter Centeno was set up by Wilmar Lopez with a cross from the right to angle a low shot into the net past Haitian goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand in only the second minute but Costa Rica then found themselves under pressure.

Reynaldo Parks had to clear off the goal line in the 35th minute after Jean-Jacques Pierre cashed in on a goalkeeping error and Haiti equalised in the 63rd minute when Roosevelt Desir crossed for Pierre to head low and in.

Hernan Medford crossed for Paulo Wanchope to go close at the start of extra time but the game was settled when the Manchester City set up Ronaldo Gomez to steer the ball in from fifteen metres for the 97th minute golden goal winner.
