African Nations Cup - Nigeria 1 Liberia 0

First Published: Jan 29, 2002

Nigeria narrowly defeated Liberia to progress to the last eight of the African nations Cup and send George Weah into retirement.

The veteran striker and Liberia coach said last week that he would retire when Liberia's interest in the Mali tournament ended.

Julius Aghahowa won the game with a 63rd minute header after a cross from Jay Jay Okocha was not cleared by defender George Gebro giving up the chance.

Nigeria will now play the runner-up of Group B in Sunday's quarter-final with Morocco favourites to reach the last eight.

Liberia goalkeeper Louis Crayton saved a 40th minute Finidi George penalty after Oliver Kaor handled a cross by Nwankwo Kanu and was in excellent form throughout as Liberia tried to keep Nigeria at bay.

Arsenal striker Kanu and midfielder Garba Lawal both forced Crayton into great second half stops as Liberia could offer little in attack despite the presence of former World Player of the Year Weah.

Weah struck a 56th minute shot from close range just wide of the upright and Prince Daye brought a good save with a volley that saw Ike Shorunmu react well in the Nigeria goal.
