The United States defeated fellow World Cup finalists Ecuador 1-0 in Birmingham Alabama with Eddie Lewis scoring the winning goal.

But US striker Clint Mathis red carded in the second half for a second booking in a tough and physical encounter littered with fouls and breaks in the play.

Cobi Jones sent Mathis clear in the 21st minute for the striker to control with one touch and curl the ball in left-footed.
