Germany came from behind to defeat the US in an entertaining game that highlighted poor defending by both sides.

The US scored through Clint Mathis in the 17th minute after goalkeeper Frank Rost had saved his shot and pushed it onto the post allowing the striker to run in and score. Mathis then forced Rost into a diving save before Germany got back on terms with a Christian Ziege drive in the 44th minute and earlier Oliver Bierhoff had missed an open goal and Bernd Schneider whipped a freekick aganst the crossbar with the home side establishing control.

Oliver Neuville put Germany into the lead with a 61st minute header and Bierhoff finally produced a decisive finish in the 65th minute with Germany putting on a spurt which ended when Torsten Frings headed the fourth goal in the 68th minute with Mathis ending the scoring with 18 minutes to go.
