A 46th minute goal from diminutive Robert Earnshaw on his debut sent Germany to defeat in cardiff.

Under a covered roof - requested by the Germans to help them to prepare for a World Cup group game in Sapporo next week - this defeat will add further to the impression that Rudi Voller's Germany will add little to next month's tournament.

They look one-paced throughout and lacked the high technical ability which should allow side to flourish in the heat and humidity of Asia with Earnshaw catching them out on a run through the middle of defence seconds after the restart to knock the ball past captain Oliver Kahn.

Four Bayer Leverkusen players including midfield star Michael Ballack were missing on European Cup duty but coach Voller did not use this as an excuse.

"We started to play well too late in the game and we were too friendly and uncommitted. Some of the players were coming back from injury and we could see they were not in great form," Voller said after the defeat.

"It would have been better to have put in a good performance but I don't think this is a drama."

A long ball from Mark Delaney was flicked on by burly striker John Hartson for Earnshaw to scamper past defender Christoph Metzelder as the German side clearly lacked concentration just afer the half-time break.

Their best chances to equalise came when Marco Bode headed against a post and Carsten Jancker hit the post with five minutes to go as the visitors dominated the final moments.
