Russia most 6-5 on penalties in Moscow after a 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia to continue a poor run in recent friendlies.
Oleg Romantsev's team has not won for five matches as they prepare for the World Cup finals and lost their second shoot-out in a row with play maker Alexander Mostovoi limping out of the game early with a slight injury which hurt their game plan.
The patient technique of Mostovoi could well shine at the finals next month and its absence knocked the shape out of the home team who let Darko Kovacevic clear from a Predrag Mijatovic pass on 55 minutes to give the Yugoslavs the lead.
Strikers Dmitry Sychov and Alexander Kerzhakov were introduced early by Romantsev and the 18 year old Sychov scored Russia's equaliser in the 87th minute when he drove from a through ball by Dmitry Khohlov.
