The United States had their defence exposed twice by Holland.

Deportivo striker Roy Makaay scored in the 45th minute with Andy van der Meyde sealing the win with 15 minutes to go.

Makaay got away from a tackle by Eddie Pope as he ran onto a long pump up field by Danny Landzaat to hit a trundling finish.

Defender Dave Regis fluffed a clearance in the 76th minute with Kasey Keller caught out his goal to concede the second goal with van der Meyde hitting into an empty net. Centre back Jeff Agoos went off with a calf strain in the 41st minute with Gregg Berhalter replacing him and after the game defender Steve Cherundolo was confirmed as replacement for the injured midfielder Chris Armas.
