Goalkeeper crisis for Paraguay

First Published: May 31, 2002

Paraguay are running out of goalkeepers after second choice Riccardo Tavarelli damaged a finger in training.

The South American side's captain and goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert is suspended for the first two games of the finals and coach Cesare Maldini may now use his third choice Jose Villar when the World Cup campaign starts against South Africa on Sunday.

Tavarelli has damaged a little finger in training:

"It is painful but I am determined to play even if the finger has to be put in plaster. I'm not going to give up the chance of playing in a match like this," he said.

Chilavert is such a dominating figure in the Paraguay squad that any rare chance to take his place is a welcome opportunity for other players.
