France upset Brazil to set up semi-final against Portugal

France sent champions Brazil crashing out of the competition on Saturday thanks to a 57th minute winner from Thierry Henry as they won 1-0 to set up a semi-final against Portugal who earlier ousted England 3-1 on penalties after the match finished 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Favourites Brazil and England were given a lesson in poor finishing as they surprisingly slumped out in the last eight despite being favoured to go through.

France continue their dominace over Brazil which now dates back to 1958 in World Cup action, the last time the South American's defeated their European rivals in the final stages.

Earlier, Portugal repeated their success over England from Euro 2004 when they knocked out Sven Goran Eriksson's side on penalties after the two teams finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of absorbing action.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted the winning kick to send Portugal and their fans into celebration after England yet again failed with the match on the line.

Frank Lampard capped a miserable tournament by missing England's first kick after Simao Sabrosa had opened the scoring in the shootout.

However Hugo Viana then missed and Owen Hargreaves scored to level the scores at 1-1 after two kicks.

Petit missed Portugal's third kick to give England the advantage but the usually reliable Steven Gerrard had his kick well saved by Ricardo to again level the scores.

Helder Postiga scored to put Portugal 2-1 up but substitute Jamie Carragher appeared to tie the shootout afte firing home only for the Argentine referee to force the Liverpool defender to retake his kick.

Carragher then missed, setting the stage for Manchester United winger Ronaldo to put Portugal through to the semi-finals and a meeting with France who knocked out Brazil.

England can consider themselves slightly unlucky after the harsh sending-off of Wayne Rooney on 62 minutes after some argie bargie with Ricardo Carvalho and Ronaldo which arguably should have resulted in a yellow card at worst.

However England failed to cave in and in fact created several match winning chances only for poor finishing to let them down.

The defeat ends the reign of Sven Goran Eriksson who leaves the post having never taken England further than the quarter-finals at a major competition.
