MrBlonde, as a new Maccabi Haifa supporter....Posted by MM on October 05, 2000 at 17:15:54:
I thought that you might be interested in a bit of information. Unfortunately, there seems to be very little in English. The official site has only a bit in English but it is not of much worth. I did manage to locate a site by a local fan which is written in reasonable English and I am including the link. A few additional items that he doesn't mention:1) Eyal Berkovich played his entire local career for Maccabi Haifa, starting from the youth level. He has been quoted as saying that he would like to manage the team after his career ends 2) Teams are allowed 5 foreign players. He has their names listed. What is not mentioned and may be of particular interest to you is that Haifa may soon add Nigeria's Yakobo Igbini to the team. Igbini is a Nigeria U-21 player who I believe may soon join the national team. Last year he played for one of our smaller teams and was one of the finds of the season. He was in Sydney with Nigeria's Olympic team and therefore has not played at all for Haifa yet. He is due in from Nigeria in the next few days and then Haifa has the option to sign him. I am waiting for further developments since he is a *very* exciting player 3)Our national coach Nielsen just named 7 Maccabi Haifa players to the team for the WC qualifyer against Spain on Saturday. They have the most of any team in the league on the national side. Included among them is *Yossi Benayoun*, the 20 year old I mentioned to you. I think he deserves a post all his own and is the only Israeli player that I will do that for. Latest report is that he will *start* in the game against Spain which makes it interesting regardless of the result 4) Last point: Rule #1 for a Maccabi Haifa fan is *NEVER* to confuse them with Hapoel Haifa. They are just not in the same league as Maccabi (well literally they are but figuratively they aren't).
