In Reply to: Hey Matsu, just a short question for you, what do you think of Roma,s Nakata, the last 2 times I have seen him play he impressed my socks off!!(NT) posted by matias on December 17, 2000 at 15:07:10:

Nakata can be really impressive. However, he has always been criticised for the same problem: he can be incredibly lazy at times. I dont see him play on a regular basis anymore, but the reasons that have been given for making hin spend time on the bench sound typical. He "isnt in peak condition", and so forth. To me, it sounds like the same old problem. He "disappears" for 20 minutes out of each match. Ive never really been able to figure it out. Is it because he loses interest in the match or just that he needs to catch his breath?

Anyway, while I definitely agree that he is a very talented player, I still havent forgotten that it was his lazy mistake -- handing the ball to Batistuta 25 meters from goal -- that led to an Argentine 1 - 0 victory in France. Until he overcomes the problem of lazy play, he will continue to watch a lot of football from the sidelines (as he did this week against Lazio).
