Ecuador are getting closer...

...to their first ever WC finals after beating Peru in Peru. One report of the game stated that Ecuador really snatched the match from a dominant Peru, but also suggested that it could be the most significant result in Ecuador's footballing history. Ecuador are formidable at home but three of their last five away games are away (and their next home game is against Argentina). It is still feasible for Uruguay or, less likely, Colombia (who unsurprisingly couldn't pull of a repeat of that 1994 5-0 win in Argentina, even under Maturana), but Ecuador are edging closer.

Of course, it is still feasible that Brazil could be pushed into the fifth place which will require the Oceania play-off, but considering that the three teams around them (Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador) still all have to play each other, as far as I can see Brazil still ought to hold on to an automatic place
