That person has a knack at putting his foot in his mouth. He's really just an muppet and few people take his remarks seriously. However, to say something like that is truly stupid. I guess he's been watching too many Bugs Bunny cartoons. Alot of people are calling for his resignation. Seeing as Toronto is a very multi-cultural city, it should probably have a mayor who is more aware of the various sensitivities of it's citizens anyway. Believe me, his foolish comments should not reflect on the people of the city, and I can ensure you we are all very embarrassed. What a terrible way to make an impression on the world stage. To be frank, I thought Toronto had no chance at landing the Olympics to begin with. Many are saying that it has hurt the bid bigtime, but I suppose we won't know to what extent until crunch time. Beijing seems to be the unanimous choice despite China's repeated human rights violations, so perhaps flippant comments like our mayor's won't really matter. I mean, what's worse? Making a joke in extremely bad taste or human rights violations? As for Olympic Football, that is the one thing I was really looking forward to were we to be successful in our bid. At least as host country our pathetic band of pub leaguers would have had yet another chance to go goal-less and embarrass themselves. However, at this point, we definately do not have the proper facilities in place for such an event. I assume building a couple of stadiums was to be part of the plan. We have a baseball stadium called Skydome, but it would not be appropriate for football. We do play American football on it, but that is quite a bit different I am sure you'll agree. I would say mayor Lastman has caused alot of damage to the bid, but moreso to Toronto's, and Canada's reputation internationally. It is the latter that bugs me the most, as our bid probably never stood a chance. The Americans are trying to keep it from us as they are interested in landing 2012. The IOC would be unlikely to grant successive North American games I am sure. So in all, the idiot's remarks were damaging but there wasn't much hope to begin with.... Cheers Jamtart (or should I just say "heart"?
